The 1974 Porsche 911 2.7 Coupe marks the debut of the G-Series body style, defining the 911 line until 1989. This Black-painted example features factory-specified Russet Red leatherette upholstery, 911S instrumentation, a leather-covered sports steering wheel, and an electric sunroof. Originally purchased in February 1974 from Jack Daniels Porsche/Audi in Fairlawn, New Jersey, the car was owned for a brief 18 months before being sold to a commercial airline pilot who kept it for the next 47 years. Acquired by the current owner in 2023, this example has undergone a recent service by Pat Williams Racing and is now being offered for auction out of Tennessee.

This 911 was refinished in black from its original Desert Beige Metallic in 1987 by renowned specialist Ralph “Mutt” Brawley of Coach Craft Porsche Collision Repair. Equipment includes a sunroof, pop-out quarter windows, impact bumpers, a front spoiler with integrated fog lights, and chrome headlight surrounds, window moldings, mirrors, and door handles. It rides on classic 15” Fuchs alloy wheels. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin features tasteful Russet leatherette upholstery as well as an optional leather-wrapped Sport steering wheel and 911S-style instrumentation. Details include OEM replacement interior-colored door panels, matching carpets, new red Coco floor mats, manual roll-up windows, and an upgraded radio. The seller notes that the factory Blaupunkt head unit will be included in the sale, and all gauges are confirmed to be in working order.

Power comes from an air-cooled 2.7L flat-six engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, driving the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. The seller indicates that routine service has been consistently performed. The most recent service, conducted by Pat Williams Racing on February 22, 2024, addressed an ignition issue and included the replacement of accelerator pedal bushings, shift coupler bushing, shift lever ball socket, throttle bushing, throttle cable bushing, oil filter, and wiper blades. Additionally, the belts, brake hoses, brake fluid, and the warm-up regulator were replaced. Labor is also said to have included rebuilding the shifter and throttle bushings and performing a clutch adjustment. Service documentation is provided in the gallery and is said to accompany the sale.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, two keys, sales literature, a toolkit, and a collection of documentation.

The seller would like you to know: “Too little time, too many cars, and limited space and energy. I can't keep them all, but this is an excellent mid-year 911 and it would be hard to find a better example that is available. The narrow-body cars with a 2.7 are a blast to drive - I own two myself but can no longer keep up with multiple cars like I once did. This 911 needs to be driven like all older 911s do!     BTW, the market for this car is running up again.

    Ralph "Mutt" Brawley is a legend. Those of us who knew him were always wowed by his abilities.
    He did a 550 Spyder 5500084 (quite literally from the ground up) for a dear friend. That car won the Manhattan Trophy at a Porsche Parade BITD. That was a "best in show" award they don't give away anymore. Road Scholars has collected a few of those cars over the years.
    While Ralph's metal skills were unsurpassed, if he changed the color on a car, it was CHANGED. No signs of the previous color whatsoever.
    The documentation is always "money" in my book and one of the first things I look for. This one would be hard to surpass. GLWA.

    PS: The '74 is THE BEST of the mid years. No smog and even CA friendly.

    Drive train is factory original to the car. First owner became ill within 18 months of purchasing it new, second owner from 1976-2013 never even thought about tracking it - and when it was driven it was usually him and the wife for casual drives. It has left no spotting in my garage for the past year or so and the oil has been religiously serviced. This is an extremely fine example of the 1974 911 coupe.

    Real Beaut! I just rebuilt a 77 911S which I'll sell,, so I'm looking for another engine to do since I have the tools and some knowledge. So to be clear this is a numbers matching engine, trans? Oil leaks, and oil burn are standard Porsche issue by now I'll presume? Thanks

    AC was removed when the car went through the cosmetic phase - long before I ever knew of the car. It was down and completely off the road for ten years according to the previous owner and as far as I can tell it is the only original part that he didn't keep.

    The original purchase order lists ‘air conditioner’ as an option but I don’t see it. To be honest I’m not sure what it would look like in ‘74. Does it have a working AC unit?

    Probably no more than 500-600 miles and no, the car has never run hot at all on me. I have owned another 2.7 liter car for well over 10 years and had the motor built as soon as I bought it and although this car has not had a rebuild it was maintained very well and pampered by the 2nd owner during the 46 plus years of his ownership. As with all air-cooled motors I would recommend an engine rebuild after all these years no matter what the mileage is if you want to be able to realize it's driving potential...especially being 49-50 years old. A rebuilt 2.7 with proper upgrades will last the rest of your life and provide plenty of fun. Finding someone that is qualified to doing the work and covering the cost is another matter all together.

    Once again I apologize for not posting a better driving vid but sadly enough I cannot seem to produce anyone to ride along and hold my phone for a short drive. If there is a viewer that can tell me how to rig a "holder" in my car I will get it asap. If not I will try to rope a body for in the morning and get it to a more open road setting...as you might have noticed I am old school and not accustomed to digital production.

    The upside of this particular color change (at least in my mind) is the fact that one of the finest Porsche body and paint men ever did the work. Personally I never met him myself but he was considered to be an absolute master at his craft and highly thought of in the paint and body world.

    Believe me that has always been my mindset as well but this time I understood why it was
    done. Sahara beige over russet (red) did not sit well with the 2nd owner and it wouldn't have been a color that I could go for either. I get the point - I can only tell you that if you just can't live with a color change this will not be the car for you.

    On another note I apologize for the delay in providing videos which I realize is quite valuable but unfortunately I am a one man operation here and have not figured out just how to rig an I phone in the car for a driving vid but I will hopefully get some help by tomorrow and should be able to do a walk around as well. I hate to say it but most of my old friends are all dead and it's hard finding good help these days.

    Greetings to everyone and thank you for the bid. I will surely do my best in responding to all questions and comments as quickly as possible and will try to provide helpful information as the auction goes along. I will start by saying that I do not currently have access to a lift but will endeavor to take some under pics with my phone. I am not quite as flexible as I once was but will do my best. I am also planning to take a couple of videos as well and will get them submitted as quickly as I can.

    I will tell you that I have long been a mid-year 911 fan and have owned several over the past 40 plus years, the narrow bodies with the 2.7 motor provides an enjoyable experience and with plenty of power in my opinion...especially when rebuilt with proper upgrades. I still own a couple of these cars and this 74 is a very special example. The first owner was a doctor that oddly enough became ill and passed within roughly 18 months of purchasing the car new, the car was then sold to the 2nd owner who kept and obsessed over it for the next 47 years. He immediately knew that he was in no way enamored with the Sahara Beige (or Desert Beige) as the dealer had referred to it, and he decided to ship the car to Mutt Brawley in North Carolina to deal with the job. Mutt suggested that he paint the car whatever color he liked so black it was and the result remains stunning to this day - 37 years later. It was a natural fit with the Russet interior as you can see. The paint was done in lacquer which was the "paint dejour" in the 80s and in my opinion looks great when it is truly clean.
    I will be watching and hopefully someone will love it enough to become the next caretaker by listing's end.
