The Citroën DS gained acclaim for its aerodynamic, futuristic body design and pioneering technology that revolutionized ride quality, handling, and braking. It was the first mass-produced car to incorporate hydropneumatic suspension, disc brakes, and directional headlights starting in 1967. With Citroën's established front-wheel drive, the DS achieved competitive success in rally racing over its nearly two-decade production period, earning multiple notable victories. Topping the model range, this Pallas version comes equipped with a 2,175cc inline four-cylinder engine mated to a 4-speed semi-automatic transaxle. Acquired by the seller on April 14, 1971, this example is now being offered for auction out of Canada.

Designed by Italian industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni and French aeronautical engineer André Lefèbvre, the DS placed third in the 1999 Car of the Century competition, fifth on Automobile Magazine's “100 Coolest Cars”, and was named the most beautiful car of all time by Classic & Sports Car magazine. Factory-specific in red, this example was later refinished in acrylic black with a nano-ceramic coating. Details include Pallas side trim, stainless-steel C-pillar trim, gold DS21 badging, a fiberglass roof panel, twin side mirrors, and stainless-steel bumpers with rubber overriders. It rides on 15” wheels dressed in new Michelin XAS tires. The seller adds that CEBEE front fog lamps have been fitted. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

Inside, the cabin showcases red cloth upholstered seats and door panels, complemented by matching carpets and contrasted with white vinyl accents. The black dashboard, steering wheel, and center armrests add a sophisticated touch. Noteworthy features include a distinctive single-spoke steering wheel, stainless-steel sill plates, a clock, roll-up windows, an AM/FM pushbutton radio, and rear window louvers. The seller mentions the inclusion of 1972-model headrests and confirms the functionality of all gauges, electronics, and accessories.

Power comes from a front mid-mounted 2,175cc inline four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels by way of a Citromatic 4-speed semi-automatic transaxle. The DS features innovative engineering, including a transmission positioned ahead of the engine, a hydraulically controlled semi-automatic transmission, and a height-adjustable hydropneumatic suspension system. Comprehensive service records dating back to 1971 are available in the gallery, and the seller adds that the. The engine and transmission were overhauled in November 2023. The seller adds that a minor LHM liquid leak occurs when the engine is stopped and the suspension is not in the low position, along with a slight sway during steering.

This sale will include a clean title and some spare parts.

The seller would like you to know: “In April 1971, following my visit to the Montreal International Car Show where I had the chance to sit in a Citroën DS and experience its remarkable comfort, I made a decision the next morning, April 14, 1971, to visit the Montreal Citroën dealer on Saint-Catherine Street in downtown Montreal. In the showroom that day, there were only two DS Pallas models on display: one black and one red. I immediately approached the black DS Pallas, but unfortunately, the salesman informed me that it had just been sold to a well-known French Canadian singer. The only remaining 1971 Pallas with directional headlights was the red one. The newer 1972 models had just arrived, but these no longer featured directional headlights as Citroën had adhered to American standards for these models. Therefore, on April 14, 1971, 53 years ago, I purchased my DS Pallas in red. A few years later, the red color faded somewhat due to sun exposure, prompting me to have it repainted in black. Knowing that Citroën had ceased exporting cars to America that year, I decided to use my DS only during the summer season. Recognizing its uniqueness, I later stored the car and reserved it solely for special events. This explains why the car remains in its distinctive condition today. You can see for yourself.”
