The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am gained widespread fame through its prominent role in the 1977 film Smokey and the Bandit, driven by Burt Reynolds' character, Bandit. This cinematic appearance not only highlighted the car's performance and distinctive styling but also cemented its status as a cultural icon of the late 1970s. Introduced in 1970 and produced until 1981, the second-generation Firebird Trans Am featured a redesigned "Coke bottle" shape aimed at improving aerodynamics and performance. This 1978 example, finished in Mayan Red with a black cloth interior, pairs a 4-speed manual transmission with a 400 cubic inch V8 engine. It is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

The F-body platform retained traditional elements of the original Trans Am while introducing a large C-pillar, which was modified in 1975 to feature a larger rear window for better visibility. The design emphasized aerodynamics, characterized by a distinctive front end, bold fender flares, and the iconic "screaming chicken" hood decal. This example is said to have been refinished in Mayan Red throughout 2017 and rides on 15” “snowflake” wheels mounted in Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires. The paint exhibits some orange peel and minor imperfections, detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The interior features front bucket seats upholstered in black cloth, complemented by a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Engine-turned aluminum accents the dashboard fascia, surrounding a 100-MPH speedometer, tachometer, analog clock, and additional gauges. Equipment includes a Formula-style steering wheel, a Pioneer head unit, a locking glovebox, and a passenger’s side grab handle. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are confirmed to be functional, although there is a minor air conditioning leak.

Beneath the hood lies a 400 cubic inch (6.6-liter) Pontiac L78 V8 engine, delivering power to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission. The seller notes that the engine and transmission casing numbers match. Recent service items include a rebuilt original steering box, installation of an aluminum radiator and water pump, and an upgraded exhaust system. Additionally, recent maintenance includes an oil and filter change along with a transmission and rear differential service.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This '78 TA is a solid driver's car driven by its current owner every weekend. She runs, drives, and shifts perfectly. Built in Van Nuys, CA- sold in Nevada and has resided in CA most of its life. Original build sheets are included!”
