With the debut of the entry-level Porsche 911T in 1968, the base Porsche 911 model was briefly labeled as the "911L" until being succeeded by the 911E in the subsequent year. The 1968 model year marked the conclusion of short-wheelbase 911s and introduced the Sportomatic transmission, enabling semi-automatic gear shifting without manual clutch operation. This 1968 example is said to have remained within the same family since it was originally purchased in Tampa, Florida, and was treated to a service in 2021 costing over $2k. Previously listed on PCARMARKET, this 911L is now being offered for auction once again with a copy of its Kardex, the original bill of sale, and extensive maintenance records.

This example came factory-finished in Light Ivory and features optional tinted glass, a passenger-side mirror, 911S-style rocker moldings, and gold rear lettering including a unique Sportomatic badge. It rides on factory 15” Fuchs wheels dressed in Bridgestone SF-371 tires. The seller notes that the car was involved in an accident in 1980 with a corresponding police report and repair bill indicating damage to the driver’s side. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with paint meter readings.

The black leatherette interior came generously optioned from the dealer with a raised steering wheel, air conditioning system, an AM/FM radio, and two headrests. The cabin is described to have been kept in excellent condition for its age and retains full functionality of all gauges and accessories, although the A/C does not blow cold.

The original air-cooled 2.0-liter flat-six engine is paired with a numbers-matching Sportomatic 4-speed transmission that drives the rear wheels. The Sportomatic unit features a vacuum-operated clutch that engages upon the driver’s grasp of the shift knob, eliminating the need for a clutch pedal. An image of the original Kardex is provided in the gallery along with maintenance invoices and drivetrain case stampings. The most recent service was completed in August 2021 and included new fuel and oil filters, valve cover and exhaust gaskets, an oil sump gasket, oil feed lines, and more.

This sale will include the original owner’s manuals, a clean title, and a collection of documentation including a letter detailing the owner's impressive Navy career and military accolades during the Second World War.

@eurocol 134/135 is the owner of German Tech who did that last service which is show in the pictures. My assistant took those pictures.
He saw nothing that trouble him with those two pictures.
I pay to have all of my mechanical work done. I do not work on cars
Just because the car sat in my show room doesn’t make me intimate with a car on consignment. I had German Tech to look under the car, and they saw nothing concerning knowing the age of the car
Again if you want a full inspection I’m willing to accommodate you, but not today. Again I do not work on cars I’m an investor and collector who spent 35 years in the investment business. Yes I have a dealers license but again I pay for mechanical work.
It does have a jack, but not a tool kit.
I dont know you so I will not try to tell you what you should know and not know, but I can tell you there are many dealers that are not mechanics, and I’m one of them.
    Hope this helps

    Wow back,
I got your number, and called..
    Anyway,
this is pretty straightforward stuff for a professional car dealer, who should be very intimate with the car
since you have had the car for over a year, have driven it and have looked under it.

The last time you listed it was back in December of 2022.
    https://www.pcarmarket.com/auction/1968-porsche-911l-sportomatic/

Pictures # 133 and # 134 show you under the car with a flashlight, so you know if there is rust,
but you didn't take pictures of the areas that are known for rust.
Definitely not asking for full inspection,
Charley everything I am asking for you should be able to answer.
What about the tool kit and Jack?
    Are they present?

Please just answer the questions honestly so we know what we are bidding on.
    Many thanks,
    JP

    @eurocol Wow
I’m not trying to evade your question, but there is no way I can do a full inspection of the car today.
I gave you my number and your call could have gone to spam so I’m sorry if I missed your call.
With that said if the car is still available tomorrow and you want to send someone to inspect the car I will do my best to accommodate you.
    I hope this helps.

  • eurocol (registered bidder) 3 days, 6 hoursago

    @tampabaysportscars
Tried calling you Charley, as I had a lot of questions.
What I wanted to ask you was about the rust situation, since the car was in WI for most of it's life.
The undercarriage pictures are dark and do not show much.
    How are the following?:
The front suspension pick up points.
    Under battery box.
Area next to the accelerator pedal.
    Jacking points.
    Sills, inner and outer.
    Areas under the rear seats.
    Around the rear lower windshield.
    All highly prone to rusting.

    Mechanically, apart from:
Tires, brakes, rear shocks, front struts, A/C not working, oil leaks,
    what else does it need?
    Do all the electrics work?
    Horn.
    Instruments.
    Lights.
    Wipers.
Do the locks and keys function properly.
Lastly does it come with a full tool kit, and Jack?
    Many thanks,
    JP

@nobrakes No the still pictures are the original ones we did before. The reason simply the car has not left the building and nothing has changed, it actually hasn’t moved
The videos of the car cold start, walk around running and me driving the car are all done the day before we put the car up for auction last week.
Nothing that I’ve haven’t already mentioned.

Interesting car. For transparency's sake the pictures and videos are six months old, correct?

Being that you are aware the car needs shocks and struts and tires, is there anything else maintenance or repair wise needed that you are also aware of?

    Sorry time flys.
Also it has not left the building and was taken out of the building to do the walk around and the video of the car running.

This is the second 911L that I have ever seen, the first, I bought in July 1969 (2 months after my 18th birthday). It was Coffee Brown with natural split leather interior and also was a 1968. Mine did not have A/C or Sportmatic. This does bring back memories. I have always had a 911 ever since. I currently have a 2003 Gamballa X50 Turbo which I have driven daily since I bought it. I usually upgraded about every 3 years until this car because I could find no reason to as it will out run anything made since. I am about to do a total restoration, all rubber, new paint, leather, etc. I was looking for an economical ride for its absence, but sure this is out of range. Nice to see it.

@TBKTX As to rust there are numerous pictures of the car both exterior and underneath.
The exterior shows no rust and the bottom picture show age but no serious issues with rust.
As to other issues the car is an original nonrestored example. To my knowledge and the family that owns the car it’s original. It does have a small oil leak, but may clear up if it was run more often. The engine has not been overhaul, but runs well as the video’s portrayed.
    Hope this helps

Seller: so is there rust present? You mentioned in a response that the car needs new shocks and new tires. Can you share other issues up front? Thanks.

    @ftsuru Thanks
If you check the last two runs on the video I was doing probably40/45. The tires are very old and need to be replaced. I didn’t take it out on the road in that I didn’t want to risk a blowout. Plus the shocks also need to be replaced. I think there is a compression check, and will go back to the mechanic who service the car. The A/C does not work, it need a compressor.
I have not check the date code on the tires I know there old.
Your correct the only damage was the accident and all the rest of the car shows as original with a paint meter.
As to rust for the age it’s really not an issue
    This 911 is on consignment,
    Hope this helps.

  • ftsuru (registered bidder) 1 week, 1 dayago

Very unique car and looks very original. While watching the video, it did not seem like you were able to get the car "up to speed", as the speed limit on the road was 25 mph. How does the car run at highway speeds? Have you had the compression checked on all 6 cylinders? That would be a good way to show the health of the engine. The AC does not blow cold; is that because it is un-charged or are there other problems with the AC system? Do you have the date codes on the tires? Is there any rust on the body or the underside? Besides the damage caused by the accident, is the rest of the car original paint? Thanks in advance.

  • tampabaysportscars (seller) 1 week, 2 daysago

@johannes356 Thanks for stopping by my auction. There are several records for this car. The latest service was completed in August of 2021. You will find a copy of that record in the image gallery, photo #144, as well as several other records from over the years.
The car does shift properly through the gears. We included a lengthy driving video that can be found in the body of this listing.

  • johannes356 1 week, 2 daysago

Do you have any service records for the Sportomatic? Do we know when it was serviced last? Does it operate all gears fully?
