Elva, a sports and racing car manufacturer established in 1955, derives its name from the French phrase “elle va” (“she goes”). This 1965 Elva Mk7S, reportedly the first of only 15 units built with a BMW engine, initially belonged to a Swiss Elva distributor and competed in European hill climb events. After being imported to the U.S. it passed through several owners, including one who raced it with a Porsche 903 motor (referred to as the Coke bottle Porsche/Elva), then later underwent restoration by Lee Chapman of Lee Chapman Racing. The car participated in numerous vintage races before being purchased by its next owner in Maine, where it continued to race for approximately 10 years, achieving multiple class wins. Acquired by the current owner thereafter, extensive maintenance has been meticulously performed. Having achieved significant success, including victories at Watkins Glen, Road Atlanta, and Road America, this iconic example has been further enhanced with a 2.2-liter engine displacement along with a new transmission and limited-slip differential. It is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Maine.

Mounted upon a tubular chassis and bodywork imported from England by Lee Chapman Racing, this Elva’s aerodynamically optimized fiberglass shell has been refinished in blue with white racing livery. It rides on black-finished multi-spoke wheels dressed in Avon racing tires from 2022. An extra set of wheels and tires is said to accompany the sale. Details include concealed headlights, front and side air intakes, a Formula-style roll hoop with a rear stay passing through the bodywork, rear air vents, round headlights and taillights, a BMW roundel, and an Elva insignia. The seller notes minor cracks in the fiberglass and a few scratches. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The open cockpit is accessible via twin bottom-hinged doors and is surrounded by a curved windshield. Equipment includes a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel, a custom bucket seat with a Schroth racing harness, and a fire extinguisher. Various switches are provided for controlling the lights, dashboard, fuel, and ignition, along with a push start button. A digital AIM Evo4S GPS telemetry dashboard and data recorder has been mounted ahead of the steering wheel, while the original black leatherette dashboard cluster faces the driver, displaying water temperature, a 10k-RPM tachometer, and oil pressure and temperature gauges.

The restoration by Lee Chapman Racing involved fitting a 2.0-liter BMW M10 engine, which has since been bored and stroked to reach a 2.2-liter displacement. It features twin Weber carburetors and generates as much as 237 HP to the rear wheels through a newly fitted Hewland Classic 5-speed “dog-leg” manual transmission and limited-slip differential. The seller states no expense was spared in building or maintaining this car, and confirms there are no outstanding service items.

This sale will include an additional set of wheels and tires and a bill of sale.

The seller would like you to know: “This car is a dream to drive and is a race winner! if you are looking for one of the best looking and maintained 60s sports racers in the US this is the car.”

    Is that a mark 9 gear box ? I HAVE A ton of gears for a mk 9 with the stonger lay shaft.

    perfect

  • SquireMotors (seller) 6 days, 8 hoursago

    @pm2207 It is geared more ideally for tracks like watkins glen and sebring. You could drive limerock without using 5th. Top speed with current setup is 160mph. We do have some additional gear sets also. Based on parts and dyno sheets the motor has a power band of 5500 to 7500. We have a soft rev limiter set at 7500 to protect the motor but it is built to rev to 9 without issue.

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 6 days, 8 hoursago

    @SquireMotors Thanks

    Any additional gear sets for the Hewland? Guessing it’s currently geared for short tracks (Lime Rock, Summit Point) based on your information and the photos.

    If he did 2 sprints per day and the enduro for each 3 day race weekend and he has 9 weekends on it he could be in the neighborhood 36-45hrs

    Can you tell from the available engine build information if this is built to be high revving 50hr rebuild or a less stressed motor?

  • SquireMotors (seller) 6 days, 14 hoursago

    @pm2207 we have not done the compression ratio calculations. The Motor was built under the former owner and we have build sheets but not that kind of info. It has always had 110 or higher fuel.

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 6 days, 15 hoursago

    @SquireMotors Thanks.

    What is the engine compression ratio/fuel octane requirements?

  • SquireMotors (seller) 6 days, 15 hoursago

    @pm2207 It has a legends of motorsports log book #0107. Last race event was the September 2022 limerock historic festival. Motor was built in 2018 and has about 9 race weekends on it. The tranmission only has the last race on it. It doesn't have a hour meter.

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 6 days, 17 hoursago

    Hi

    What log books come with the car?
    When was it last raced?
    How many hours on the engine since rebuild?

    Thanks
