This 1959 Porsche 356A Coupe was imported to Sweden in May 1959 by general agent Scania-Vabis and delivered by the dealer Frode Lund in Malmö finished from the factory in Sonderfarbe Orange. It first competed in 1959 at Roskilde Ring, Denmark, and after changing hands several times up until 1978, the car found its current owner beginning a remarkable 45-year tenure. It was subject to an extensive bare-metal refurbishment between 1978 and 1982 and went on to compete in about 100 historic races in FIA Appendix K Class GTS 5 with an FIA Historic Technical Passport up until 2010. The car has been modified with Plexiglas windows, a lightweight Carrera GT-style interior, Carrera GT brakes, and an upgraded Super 90 engine producing up to 110 HP. After its racing career, this 356 underwent a meticulous restoration from 2015 to 2018 and was registered for street use in Sweden the following year. Boasting over four decades of unbroken ownership and authentic racing history, this road-ready 356A race car is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Sweden.

This Reutter-bodied Coupe was factory-finished in the special-order color of Orange (5711) and has been modified with dual mirrors, Plexiglas rear and side windows, aluminum bumper mounts, splash plates, leather hood straps, a Marchal Fantastic 662 spotlight, an external killswitch, and an auxiliary brake light at the top of the rear window. The bumper guards have been removed and a Carrera GT trim strip has been added. The car rides on 4.5” x 15” Lemmertz wheels dressed in Yokohama 185/65R15 tires. The refurbishment in 1978-1982 included the replacement of the floor pans, battery box, longitudinals, lock post, and repairing the rocker panels before the body was stripped to bare metal and resprayed in its original color. The car was refinished once again in 1998 following a minor accident. The seller notes there are no jack mounts, and some paint imperfections are present including stone chips, cracks, and bubbles. Additional images are provided in the gallery.

The lightweight racing-style interior features new tan square weave carpeting and black leatherette upholstery along with Recaro 1328 bucket seats, a removable four-point roll bar, and a removable three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel. Other accessories include lightweight door panels with leather window straps, red four-point Sabelt/Sparco safety harnesses, a short shifter with an aluminum gear knob, tan rubber floor mats, and a body-colored dash fascia with analog VDO gauges. The seller notes the rubber mats are worn and show cracks, the glovebox is missing, and the handbrake has been relocated between the seats. All electronics, gauges, and lights are said to be working properly. Before the sale, the original five-digit 200-km/h VDO speedometer showed 60k kilometers (about 38K miles) and was replaced by a 120-mph VDO unit that shows 30k miles. The car’s true mileage is unknown.

Installed in 2018, the modified 356 1600 Super 90 engine (800821) was rebuilt and upgraded with Shasta 83.5mm pistons, re-bored cylinders, a reground and balanced crankshaft, new crank bearings, new valves and guides, and Mirra cut seats. It features a full-flow oil system with an auxiliary fan and cooler in the left rear fender. There is also a small pulley, electric fuel pump, fuel filter, and a single-outlet exhaust in stainless steel. The rear wheels are driven through a Type 644 4-speed manual gearbox with BBBC ratio gearing. The gearbox has been rebuilt with new synchronizer rings, bearings, and a new clutch. Stopping power comes from 60mm Carrera GT drum brakes in front and 356B drum brakes in the rear, all with cooling coops in the backing plates. The braking system includes a dual master cylinder and stainless-steel braided lines. The chassis also includes a 19mm front sway bar, a 26mm rear torsion bar, adjustable shock absorbers, and refurbished ZF steering gear.  The car was approved for road use by Swedish authorities in 2019 and was recently serviced with fresh fluids, carburetor and brake adjustments, and wheel alignment. The seller indicates minor oil leaks are coming from the engine and gearbox.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a spare tire, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “A Porsche 356A coupe with 30 years on the track, now ready for the road. It isn’t a concours car, it’s an old racecar with patina, it’s a driving machine. This Porsche 356A participated in about 100 historic races between 1983 and 2010 The car competed in FIA Appendix K Class GTS 5, with a FIA Historic Technical Passport. After its racing career, the car underwent a meticulous restoration for street use from 2015 to 2018. The approval by Swedish Car Testing in 2019 without remarks attested to its roadworthiness. The car has never been driven on the road between 1972 and 2019 and after that, it’s only driven 100 miles per year. This transition back to the streets didn't compromise its racing spirit.”

The Nürburgring Nordschleife video is so cool when the driver uses the track to overtake a Carrera RS or I should say the presentation of the car is just stunning! The best I have seen here on Pcarmarket or Bringatrailer will be an interesting last-hour

@defenderdelray I don't know the rules for the Carrera Pan Americana, but this car is approved for historic racing by the FIA (Federation Internationale de L'Automobile) which approves international competitions worldwide.

crazy question for seller...or anyone. Would this car qualify for classic division , any category for La Carrera PanAmericana

  • PRRSR (seller) 5 days, 18 hoursago

@Valor1 This may be due to the car being located in Europe. Transportation can be arranged to New York, Miami, Houston and Los Angeles by transportation companies that are used to car transportation to the United States

Stunned by the low high bid. I'm no Porsche expert, but this car looks like a blast to drive, looks vintage and clearly runs well and fast!

This is one of the most well-known cars in 356 Historic racing in Europe especially in the famous Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix, it is not a race for any car! And the same at The Eifelrennen was an annual motor race, organized by ADAC Automobile Club from 1922 to 2003, held in Germany's Eifel mountain region. Like other races of its time, it was first held on public roads. In 1927 it was moved to the newly-built Nürburgring.
To see a car that has covered all these tracks and completed + 100 other famous races is just incredible in perfect conditions, that we don't see every day! with the same owner! I can understand it's with tears in your eyes that you selling a car! but hopefully, a new car taker will continue its road in a good sprite!
The 356 Whether displayed at automotive events or driven on the streets, this ex-racer continues to embody the spirit of its racing heritage, captivating enthusiasts with every rev of its modified engine and every nod to its Carrera GT DNA! Do hope it will stay in Europe, is part of Porsche's history and the racing history that started with the 356 cars
